The bones in your child’s feet will develop over time— from the cartilage they were born with to ossified bones that are fully formed around the age of 18. For the first few months of their lives, babies’ feet are quite delicate. That is why the type of footwear you choose for your child is very important. You don’t want your child’s developing feet to be distorted by footwear that does not fit properly. Make sure footwear and socks are never tight. While your child’s feet are developing, the nerve endings in their feet are developing too and may not be able to signal if their feet are being squeezed or compressed. Since no two feet are the same, avoid hand-me-down shoes that may not be right for your child’s feet. Keep their toenails trimmed straight across without curving them or cutting them so short that it puts them at risk of developing an ingrown toenail. For more advice on how to best protect your child’s feet as they grow, it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist.

Your gait is the manner in which you walk. When a patient has a unique walking style or an abnormal gait, a podiatrist will often conduct a gait analysis to study their walking habits. Gait analysis can tell a lot about a person's body movements. This can help to determine what is causing imbalances in areas such as the hamstrings, glutes, quads, or calves. The analysis can take place on a treadmill or by simply walking down a hallway. In even more complex analyses, sensors and video recordings may be used to diagnose any areas of concern as the patient walks. Anyone struggling with pain as they walk should consult with a podiatrist to receive a proper gait analysis, and to customize a treatment plan that is specific to their walking pattern.

Biomechanics in Podiatry
Podiatric biomechanics is a particular sector of specialty podiatry with licensed practitioners who are trained to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot, ankle and lower leg. Biomechanics deals with the forces that act against the body, causing an interference with the biological structures. It focuses on the movement of the ankle, the foot and the forces that interact with them.
A History of Biomechanics
Modern technological improvements are based on past theories and therapeutic processes that provide a better understanding of podiatric concepts for biomechanics. Computers can provide accurate information about the forces and patterns of the feet and lower legs.
Understanding biomechanics of the feet can help improve and eliminate pain, stopping further stress to the foot.

If you have sprained one of the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joints in your foot your podiatrist may suggest that you do gentle exercises to help your recovery. Gentle stretches can help to keep your muscles and ligaments flexible. One simple stretch is a great toe extension. To do this exercise, sit down and place your affected foot over your other knee. With one hand, grasp the heel. With your other hand, gently pull your big toe backwards. You should feel a stretch along the bottom of your foot. Hold this stretch for 15-30 seconds and repeat several times for best results. To find more stretches and determine which ones may be right for you, please consult with your podiatrist.

As the foundation of the body, the foot and ankle are complex, amazing structures made up of many ligaments, nerves, tendons, joints, and bones—including the largest bone in the foot, the heel. The heel helps form the arch and manages stress during walking and running. All of this use and stress can lead to painful conditions of the heel and its surrounding tendons and ligaments. Plantar fasciitis, the most common form of heel pain, is an inflammation of the connective tissue that spans the bottom of the foot (plantar fascia). Another common form of heel pain occurs with Achilles tendonitis, which causes inflammation and pain in the (Achilles) tendon that attaches the heel with the calf muscles. A loss of cushioning in the plantar fat pad can cause the heel to become bruised, and the heel bone can also fracture, causing intense pain. Retrocalcaneal Bursitis is an inflammation of the fluid-filled bursa sac that cushions the back of the heel bone. Any type of heel pain should be diagnosed by a podiatrist. who can assess the situation and create an appropriate treatment plan based on their findings.
Many people suffer from bouts of heel pain. For more information, contact Jeffrey Radack, DPM of Texas Regional Foot & Ankle Clinics. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
Causes of Heel Pain
Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.
Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.
Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.
Why Might Heel Pain Occur?
Treatments
Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.
